Olefin Purification

Ethylene & Propylene Purification

From Cold Train to Catalyst, Every Stage Sets Its Own Purity Target

A few ppm of water in cracked gas can cause hydrate or ice formation in the cold section. Trace oxygenates, CO₂ or sulfur compounds can push product off spec or affect sensitive Ziegler–Natta and metallocene catalysts.

JALON makes molecular sieves and adsorbents to remove these impurities, with material selection matched to your feed, outlet targets and planned cycle.

Where Impurities Hurt

Three Points in the Olefin Train Where Purity Is Won or Lost

Across different plant configurations, cracked gas, product streams and polymer feed each have their own impurity and outlet limits.

01

Cracked Gas Drying

Control

Residual water in cracked gas upstream of the cold section

Outlet duty

Keep moisture below the cold-section limit to avoid hydrates or ice.

JALON options

3A takes up water while limiting uptake of larger olefins at the crystal pore. Protection grades address challenging inlet exposure.

02

Ethylene & Propylene Product

Control

Residual water, oxygenates, CO₂ or sulfur compounds

Outlet duty

Meet the individual impurity limits in the product specification.

JALON options

The treatment material follows the measured contaminant; drying alone does not establish oxygenate purity.

03

Polymer Feed & Catalyst Protection

Control

Trace water, oxygenates, CO₂ or sulfur entering the reactor

Outlet duty

Meet the catalyst supplier’s limits before impurities affect activity or polymer quality.

JALON options

A saleable monomer stream may still need further purification before polymerization.

Adsorbent Screening & Selectivity

Different Impurities. Different Materials.

Moisture, oxygenates, CO₂ and sulfur compounds place different demands on an olefin purification bed. JALON offers molecular sieves, activated alumina and duty-specific grades to address these removal needs, from selective drying to catalyst-feed polishing.

Bed Performance

The Real Feed Defines the Bed’s Duty

Static H₂O and CO₂ capacities and crush strength show how a material performs in defined tests. A real olefin bed can still reach its outlet limit before the planned changeover. What matters is usable working capacity under your feed—and which controlled impurity approaches its limit first.

01 / Feed Peaks

A Peak Feed Can Bring Breakthrough Forward

Average feed analyses can miss water spikes, oxygenate swings or liquid carryover. At the actual flow, temperature and pressure, these events increase the load on the bed.

JALON support: review normal and peak feed conditions with the outlet limits in a preliminary material plan.
02 / Working Capacity

The First Outlet Limit Sets the Run Length

Competing impurities do not move through a bed at the same rate. One can reach its outlet limit while other capacity remains unused.

JALON support: provide material samples and test reports to evaluate the candidate grade.
03 / Bed Operation

Every Regeneration Sets Up the Next Cycle

Incomplete regeneration leaves less working capacity for the next run. Particle size and pressure drop also constrain the bed; excessive heat can promote deposits in olefin service.

JALON support: discuss handling, loading and activation for the selected material.

Engineering FAQs

Olefin Dryer and Guard Bed FAQs

Its approximately 3À crystal openings admit water while excluding the larger olefin molecules. This limits crystal-pore uptake of valuable ethylene or propylene. A larger-pore material such as 4A has a different co-adsorption profile, so its suitability must be checked for the actual stream.

Do not specify 3A drying alone for those separate removal duties. JALON lists 13X and JLAZ-2 for olefin oxygenate treatment, and different JLOP grades for COz, sulfur and oxygenate duties. Molecular oxygen (02) is distinct from oxygenated compounds and needs its own limit.
No. Methanol, dimethyl ether and aldehydes need not adsorb or break through at the same rate. Identify each compound, its normal and peak inlet level, and its outlet limit before selecting the treatment material.
Liquid can wet the beads, increase pressure drop and bring water breakthrough forward. Check the upstream separator and the bed condition first. A protective grade can help with challenging inlet exposure, but it does not replace liquid separation.
An adsorption front moves through a flowing bed. It can reach the outlet while capacity remains unused elsewhere. Feed spikes, competing compounds or incomplete regeneration may bring that front forward; static uptake is not the bed’s working capacity.
Unequal flow is one possible cause. Compare flow split, pressure drop, outlet trends and regeneration history across vessels before attributing the difference to an adsorbent batch.
Not automatically. Insufficient heating or purge can leave contaminants behind for the next run. Excessive temperature may increase side-reaction or deposit risk in olefin service. Check the selected grade’s regeneration and cooling requirements against the vessel limits.
